Giants Veteran Emerges As Trade Candidate After Early Struggles

The New York Giants have finally pulled the plug on Russell Wilson.
However, the former Super Bowl winner insists he’s not done.
That’s why, with the trade deadline closing in, perhaps a team will be desperate enough to give him another opportunity, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo:
“Wilson is expected to emerge as a trade candidate prior to the deadline on Nov. 4, the target of a QB-needy team in need of a veteran, according to sources around the league. Wilson is making $10.5 million from the Giants this year, but $8 million of that came in a signing bonus. Thus, a team trading for Wilson would assume just a portion of his $2 million base. That’s cheap enough to happen midway through the season, when wallets are tight against the salary cap. The Giants are likely to consider such a move for the right price, a luxury because Jameis Winston, a veteran with 87 starts, would then serve as their backup behind Dart. Winston currently is QB3 on the Giants’ depth chart,” per Rapoport and Garafolo.
Wilson signed an incentives-based deal, so he has no reason to stay in the Big Apple if he’s not going to get playing opportunities.
Barring an injury, it’s hard to believe the Giants will revert to him, not even if Dart struggles.
It’s becoming painfully evident that the Giants aren’t likely to be a playoff-caliber team this year, and the only way to make this campaign not be a total waste will be to allow Dart to grow through his mistakes.
Wilson hasn’t been as good as he was for years now.
He’s struggled to keep the momentum going since his trade away from the Seattle Seahawks, and he’s now played for his third different team in as many years.
It looks like he’s lost a step, he’s no longer mobile, and he’s not even finding his guys with his deep shots down the field.
Also, his demeanor has rubbed some people the wrong way in his previous stops.
Nevertheless, this is still a quarterback’s league, and as a Cincinnati native, perhaps the Bengals will look to bring him back home to make up for the loss of Joe Burrow.
