The New York Jets need things to work out with Justin Fields.

The former Ohio State star didn’t look sharp at all in practice, but he looked much better in the preseason opener.

Even so, as per usual, he had his fair share of detractors.

With that in mind, head coach Aaron Glenn addressed the critics in his latest press conference.

“There is so much noise on the outside & again I’ve told you guys this & I’ve told them this, he’s going to get criticized for every little thing & the good thing about him is that he’s so mature & we talk about this on a consistent basis that he doesn’t care. The only thing that we care about is how is he operating? Is he getting better? We see that in house. So we love where he is at right now. Does he have a ways to go? Absolutely he does. Is he going to continue to work? Absolutely he will because that is just who he is,” Glenn said of Fields.

Fields was out there for a drive.

He led the team on a 10-play, 79-yard drive, and he capped it off by scrambling for a 13-yard score.

Fields finished the game 3-for-4 for 42 yards and his running touchdown.

To say that his career has been up and down would be a bit of an understatement.

He’s always been a highly-touted player with impressive physical tools, and he has a huge fan base rooting for him.

Unfortunately, he has never been on a team that has fully committed to his playing style and playing to the best of his strengths.

That might finally be the case in New York, but judging by the way he’s struggled throughout the course of his career, he won’t have a big margin for error.

We’ve seen late bloomers take a step forward and dominate once they find the right place and environment for them, and hopefully, that will be the case with Fields and the Jets; they clearly need one another.

If not, this might be his final chance to prove that he can be a starter in this league.
